چکیده

Mechanised tunnelling is characterised by a number of interacting components relevant for the excavation process (the soil including groundwater, the TBM, the linings, the support at the cutting face and the tail void) and by a staged process of excavation and lining erection. This imposes a considerable challenge for realistic modelling of the tunnelling process. The paper addresses recent advances in computational modelling of shield tunnelling. It is shown, how a three-dimensional finite element model, which is able to adequately represent the aforementioned components and their interactions, may be used for reliable predictions of the interactions between the excavation process and the soil within the design stage as well as in the construction stage. The paper also highlights the role of numerical simulations in the context of an integrated optimization Platform for Tunnelling (IOPT) currently being developed within the European research project “Technology Innovation in Underground Construction” (TUNCONSTRUCT). Since for more or less similar ground conditions different designs are often used and the selection of construction methods is often biased by personal experience, this platform shall finally constitute a decision support system providing a systematic guidance through the complete process of the design of machine-driven tunnels.

Numerical modeling of tunneling induced ground deformation and its control

Tunnelling through cities underlain by soft soil, commonly associated with soil movement around the tunnels and subsequent surface settlement. The predication of ground movement during the tunnelling and optimum support pressure could be based on analytical, empirical or the numerical methods. The commonly used Earth pressure balance (EPB) tunneling machines, uses the excavated soil in a pressu...

Experimental study on foamed sandy soil for EPBM tunnelling

Foam injection is becoming a standard conditioning agent when tunnelling with an earth-pressure balanced shield, resulting in an increasing interest in this technique. The technique is mostly based on empirical rules and experience. To be able to determine what foam and how may foam has to be injected for different soils, it is necessary to know the mechanical parameters of the foam-water-soil ...

The Effect of Structural Parameters on the Electronic States and Oscillator Strength of a Resonant Tunneling Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector

In this paper a resonant tunnelling quantum well infrared photodetector (RT-QWIP) is discussed. Each period of this photodetector structure comprises of a resonant tunnelling structure (AlAs/AlGaAs/AlAs) nearby a quantum well (AlGaAs/GaAs). In this photodetector, photocurrent is produced when an electron makes a transition from the ground state of the well to an excited state which is coupled t...
